Senior Citizens, Stay Healthy this Summer! (Part 1)

Senior Citizens, Stay Healthy this Summer! (Part 1)

When we speak of summer, three things come to our mind: beach, watermelon, and swimming suits! But of course, this was when we were still younger. Now that we are beyond the age where we want to party till the last drop of our energy, we only want to have a good rest this summer vacation.

Growing old brings out a new set of predicaments during the summer season. And in order to prevent these problems, Comfort and Care Health Services LLC, the number one and the finest Home Health Agency in Chillicothe Ohio, lists down tips seniors need to follow to remain safe and healthy this summer:

  1. Be wary of hyperthermia

Mountain climbers, especially those who want to climb mountains with high altitudes like Mt. Everest, are advised to know the harmful effects of hypothermia. Hypothermia is the extreme exposure to the cold weather. It can lead to frostbites and eventually, death.

On the other hand, the opposite of hypothermia is hyperthermia. This is an abnormal body condition in which the body is exposed to high temperature. Just like hypothermia, hyperthermia is life-threatening.

You can tell if someone has the mentioned hyperthermia if he or she shows the following signs and symptoms:

    • Body temperature of 104o F
    • Dry and red skin
    • Fainting
    • Headache
    • Heavy breathing
    • Nausea
    • Not sweating despite the high temperature
    • Rapid pulse
    • Sudden change of behavior (especially if one is becoming restless, confused or bad-tempered)
    • Vomiting

There is a greater risk of hyperthermia among the elderly than other age groups. This is because older adults have a harder time regulating their body temperature.

  2. Do not forget your sunscreen and hat

During this time of the month, we need to prioritize the protection of our skin. Wearing sunscreen and hat when going outside is a must. You need the extra protection you can get especially because you are more sensitive than you ever had been.

Remind yourself to wear sunscreen every time you go out. Make it a habit. As for the hat, you can be protected and become fashionable at the same time. Aside from that, you can cover the thinning parts of your hair. How is that for staying cool and chic at the same time?

  3. Get in touch with the neighbors

There are pros and cons of having neighbors. Let us start with the number one disadvantage: you may not get along. There are neighbors who want a specific style of their lawn, therefore, affecting yours. Some neighbors are loud, keeping you awake at night. Others have pet animals that may accidentally destroy some of your property.

But the finest benefit of having a neighbor is that you have someone who can check up on you and give you company. You can not only enjoy their presence in your home but also feel safe.
