There are times when we trip over a small crack on the pavement or feel dizzy all of the sudden. But when you are losing your balance on a regular basis, there might be some underlying problem on your health.

Once we age, we might feel unsteady when we walk or move around the house. That is normal. What is not normal though is when your balance is constantly giving you problem that you cannot do the things that you are supposed to do. So an ideal thing you should carry out is to consult your doctor.

Loss of balance among seniors may be usual. However, in some cases, it is a call for a more dangerous threat to one’s health. In this blog, we will be sharing some potential causes why people lose their balance.

  • Inner ear problem

Did you know we have two more additional senses?

One of this is our sense of balance. Our vestibular system is responsible for this sense. This system is our organ of balance. It is located inside our inner ear and is composed of 3 canals that are filled with fluid, the semicircular canal, and the otolith organs.

Doctors often see Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) as the most common problem in the patient’s inner ear. When this condition happens, the signals get jumbled up by tiny crystals that float around, bump, and dislodge the mentioned sensors.

You do not have to worry if this is the case. One or two appointments to your doctor will do the trick. They will simply make you do a series of slow head movements and the crystals in your vestibular system will be gone.

However, you should immediately rush to the doctor’s if you have experienced vertigo for a while now, especially if they keep coming back.

  • Weak muscles

I have fallen and cannot get up!” This is what seniors often complain once they fall to their knees. The reason why older people have bad balance is because of the deterioration of their muscles.

Our muscles play a vital role in keeping our balance. Once your muscles decline with age, you will have a difficulty in keeping your body upright. This can also lead to poor posture. This may be normal for all you seniors out there but when is the time you should be weary of this problem?

You should only be concerned of this if you prefer not to do things because you are too scared to fall down. Falling is scary, given the fact that many have died from it. But when it hinders you from living your life, you need to act upon the situation.

The good side of this problem is that you can do something in order to restore your balance. You can work out and do balance exercises. You can even ask a physical therapy to guide you through the process.

  • Medications

Medications have side effects and some drugs have dizziness as a side effect to the benefits you are currently enjoying. Ask your doctor on what you can do about this problem.

  • Blood flow

Orthostatic hypotension is common among patients. This condition refers to the lack of blood flow to your brain. This even is responsible for the lowering of your blood pressure hence making you feel dizzy as you immediately stand up while you are lying or sitting down.

Those are just common causes why you lose your balance. These conditions are not extremely life threatening. But in order to avoid mishaps, you should visit your doctor and tell them about your concerns.
