Health Tips in Keeping Shingles at Bay

When you were younger, you may remember getting chickenpox or varicella. You had rashes all over your body. But it healed after a few weeks. However, the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which caused chickenpox, does not entirely go away. It remains dormant in your nerve cells and may have the chance to reactivate later into herpes zoster or shingles.

In our experience as a home health agency in Chillicothe Ohio, we are familiar with the symptoms of shingles. These may include burning pain, rashes, fluid-filled blisters, itching or pain, and sensitivity of the skin.

There is no cure for shingles, so the best way to deal with it is to let the sickness take its course. But this doesn’t mean that it is unmanageable.   • Allow for plenty of rest. They should also get a well-balanced meal. The calories will provide the energy for the body to heal itself.
  • Avoid stressing them out to ease some of the pain. Watching the TV or listening to some music might help.
  • Apply calamine lotion to help relieve the itch. Wet compresses or oatmeal baths may also do the trick.
  • Treatment with prescription antiviral drugs can help speed up healing.
